in this clip, a guy says that he was homeschooled and struggled to make friends, so he got into making clothes to find his people. He thought if he made clothes he found cool, and they attracted other people who thought they were cool, then he would have attracted people with similar taste.

I think this is a function of art.

It is often talked about how a musician gets into the craft to pick up women. Leonard Cohen picked up a guitar at age 15 with the sole intention of impressing girls…

That is an aspect of it. Expressing art as a human is like those birds doing the dance to attract a mate. Part of it is that. Through art you can externalize your beauty and prove your potential. You can show yourself. This can attract potential mates. It can also attract friends though. It can gain you respect from the people who resonate with it. That’s cool. You can find like-minded people by learning and art form. You can find people you think are really cool, who you look up to, by doing the stuff you’d imagine they’d do. Do stuff you think would impress them.

this is a major motivator in many things. Not just art but in sports too. It’s not all about impressing a member of the opposite sex… It’s often about gaining respect and gaining friends. Gaining allies.

find something you love and get involved in it

through this you can find community and fellowship
